Somewhere in a Russian computer laboratory, researchers are claiming to have contained the holy grail of computer viruses – a piece of malware which can spread without wifi, can infect PCs, Macs and Linux machines alike – and affects the Bios of the computer – the lowest level of code found on the computer.
The researcher Draos Ruiu and his team have named the virus “BadBIOS” and claim that is it a new type of cyberweapon – which he claims spreads using sound.
British tech website “The Register” is a little skeptical instead choosing to call the virus “The loch ness monster of computer viruses”. They claim that the virus is “pure rumour and conjecture currently”.
Researcher Ruiu admits that BadBIOS is the “stuff of urban legend” – but says he will reveal more information in 2 weeks.
We think that we’ll wait and see – if there really is a virus that can spread by sound alone, this would indicate a completely new threat class – something anti-malware software authors might have a very hard time combating.
